Re: Non-compliance

Dear (residents),

This communication is to inform you that a recent exterior inspection by the PA HOA has detected unapproved and/or non-compliant alterations to the property at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

These violations include:

• Non-permitted demolition in the (former) East Wing.

• 2,000 square feet of pavement laid over the former Rose Garden.

• Prohibited signage, visible from outside, identifying The Oval Office. Additionally, the gilded script in the sign violates the authorized color palette, which is limited to Sherwin-Williams Anthracite Black for fencing and Polar White for exterior walls and trim, including design elements visible through ground level windows. (Please note: MAGA White is a non-approved color.)

The gold lettering has been a particular trigger for your neighbors, who have written the Association to denounce the décor variously compared to a “19th-century French brothel,” “nouveau riche country club” and “Palm Beach funeral home.” One complaint decried “a stately historic landmark suddenly tricked out like a Persian orthodontist’s Orange County McMansion.”

Most egregiously, the residents have flouted the express PA HOA procedures for alterations to member properties, including an application process requiring advance sign-offs from at least 4 (four) neighbors. Our records indicate that you have repeatedly proceeded to demolition and construction without submitting any alteration plans whatsoever. Please be on notice that the Association will avail itself of any and all remedies to address these matters.

Furthermore, while 1600 is zoned for both residential and office use, it is not authorized for commercial use, such as crypto-currency and electric-sedan marketing, sale of pardons for cash and bartering of foreign policy decisions based on donations or “investments” in the residents’ personal interests.

Similarly, the premises are not zoned for worship services, so cabinet meetings would not be in compliance.

Those apparent violations do not fall explicitly within the purview of PA HOA regulations. However, under Association covenants, residents are responsible for “maintaining their premises in compliance with all local ordinances,” and the Association is obliged to refer suspected violations to the relevant authorities. Absent a satisfactory response outlining immediate steps toward compliance, we shall do so in 30 days.

As such, District of Columbia police will also be informed — based on multiple neighborhood complaints — of the alleged “blasting of the 1970s pop song ‘YMCA’ at all hours of day and night, along with window-shade silhouettes on the south-side second floor of a heavyset elderly man apparently undergoing a grand mal seizure.”

Be advised you must respond to this notice within 30 days or face immediate court action. To be clear, NO RESIDENT IS EXEMPT from Association requirements. More than 160 judicial decisions in the past 25 years have upheld HOA authority over community aesthetics, up to and including potential orders to undo, at the residents’ expense, any unauthorized “improvements.”

Be further advised this matter is not comparable, for example, to deporting people without due process, murdering criminal suspects on the high seas, deploying the military to terrorize urban residents, summarily firing perceived disloyal bureaucrats or flouting Congressional authority to unilaterally dismantle programs and agencies.

Conforming to the Constitution is one thing; conforming to community architectural guidelines is a very different matter. We are the HOA. We wield power you can only dream of.

Sell out Ukraine to Putin. Emasculate officials of your own party. Jail and bomb innocents. Run roughshod over the Bill of Rights. Go crazy. But if you know what’s good for you, neighbor, do not fuck with us.
