Below you’ll find Chapter 18 of Pluto Walks the Earth, the satirical novel I’ve been sharing with you for the past four months — and will be for the next 10 to follow.

Apologies for pestering, but we do want to know how you’re enjoying Pluto and company. Have they won your attention and curiosity? We know you’re reading each installment. What we don’t know is what you’re thinking. Please tell us, because the plot is fixin’ to thicken. Share your impressions in the comments section and among your social-media circles. It’s a crazy ride with many a twist and turn, including hallucinogens and unusual cat safety measures. Are you here for the duration?

The truth is, I wasn’t paying all that much attention to Pueblo Mineral. I’m on the business beat at the New Mexican, which means paying attention to Cities of Gold and Camel Rock Casino, the hospitality and tourism trade, Thornburg Investment Management, Earthstone International, Technosoft, Akal Security and the business aspects of the hospitals. Health care is probably our biggest industrial sector. If it weren’t for Sandia Lab, it would be our biggest employer, too. I’ve been covering regional business for 10 years, so I know the landscape pretty well.
