From the moment he stumbled into my store, I always knew Pluto McDowell was in the right place. He had clearly found the home for his vision. I just never knew exactly what gifts he would bring to us. Then this thing emerges from nowhere.

The thing is called PMR, Pueblo Mineral Resources, which is a provider of high-energy gardening products harvested from the skin of Mother Earth. You can’t buy it in a store; they sell through a network of independent distributors who build their own networks by recruiting their customers — and others — to join up in the organization just below them. And so on and so on.  It’s called multilevel marketing, Like Herbalife. And it’s pretty big in New Mexico because we need potting soil to grow anything green in our sand, and because the company is headquartered right here in Rio Arriba County.
