Read Pluto Walks the Earth, Chapter 39: Bad Beat
Mary Lou
We like to go to bed early. Candy is up at 6:30 to get to work at 7:45, and I like to have coffee with her before she goes, so usually I’m in the kitchen by 7. Most days. So lights out by 11 pm. This is Monday night, and it happens Candy is gone. She and her mom left Saturday for a trip to Vietnam, her first ever. It’s only five days, because that’s all the leave she could get, but it’s sort of a dream come true for her, bless her heart. Still, I’m up so early, by midnight I’m like a December bear. Force of habit. I hit the pillow and, Sweet Pea, I am out. So when the phone rings at 2:30 am — well, dear heart imagine. I liked to jump out of my skin.
“Hello? What? Who is this?”
What in the world? It’s Pluto.
“Pluto McDowell, what are you up to? Child are you OK?”
“Mahapandita, I have blood in my pee.”
