Just happened to my aunt. Sorry you suffered the same fate. Have you made any other changes to your security practices? Password manager? NFT attack dog?

This is the exact sort of thing that goes on with the anti-scammer activists, wherein they pretend to be a, well, a gullible Bob Garfield on the phone, let the scammer believe they have been granted access to the "victim's" computer, then turn the tables and delete files from the scammer's computer. It's a rather pointless exercise, because these scammers usually have networked PCs and cloud data backups. What you describe is how scammers regularly con trusting people. As you observed, you had a LOT of clues and opportunities to review and reconsider. Sorry you got this rude awakening.
